$35 a month covers the needs of one child in one of our programs. 

But our approach is different than a lot of other child sponsorship organizations out there.  You won’t be matched up with a specific child because we have found that one-on-one sponsorship is not as beneficial to that child as placing them in a loving, community-driven program.

We know this will be disappointing to some of you.   You want a picture of that one child that is “yours” to hang on the fridge.  But the fact that you are reading this page to learn more about child sponsorship shows you have a compassionate heart.  After all, this IS all about the children! 

So we know that you would choose to do what would not only help one AIDS orphan but also help stop the cycle of poverty and disease so there isn’t a next generation of AIDS orphans!   In the long run, one-on-one sponsorship is not in the best interest of the child, or the adult she is going to grow into being, or the next generation of children who will follow in her footsteps.  If she is “adopted” by you, she grows up thinking it was the monthly check from afar that got her through.

Instead, the children in our programs feel that they are being taken in and nurtured by their community.  The church, the school, the community is caring for its own.  It embodies and revives the traditional African way, rather than stressing foreign aid.  Aid viewed as a handout creates dependence on the handout and an ever increasing flow of aid is needed.  It is a perpetual cycle.

AFnetAid believes it is more important that children grow up believing it is the responsibility of the community to care for the weak and the vulnerable and then when they are adults, they will do the same.  They are empowered to care for themselves and others and will not look to the handout before employment or enterprise or agriculture.  When you sponsor a child in our programs, you are not only empowering that child, you are empowering a community.

Other organizations advertise that sponsored children know that they are loved when they receive letters from sponsors on the other side of the world.  Our children know this too – they know they are loved and cared for – but all the children in the centers feel loved equally.  Sometimes there are not enough sponsors for every child in an orphan center, or some sponsors write and others don’t, or a sponsor has to drop out due to financial reasons.  Does this mean that the left out child is not loved?  Of course not!  Every child is supported by every sponsor, and loved by every sponsor.  You get the opportunity to love more than one child!  You will see and hear the difference you are making in many children’s lives.  You will be matched up with an orphan center and through photos, videos, stories and letters you will meet the children who are served by that center.
